he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya frowned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That isn&#8217;t a real answer.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No,&#8221; Luca said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It isn&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elena pulled out the chair beside her daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Tommy, honey, can you give us a few minutes?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tommy&#8217;s eyes moved to Luca.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then to Elena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then to Maya.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Do I have to?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Is it bad?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It&#8217;s private.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tommy considered this distinction and apparently found it unsatisfactory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stood anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before leaving, he placed the apple in front of Maya with solemn ceremony.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;In case you need it,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For what?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t know yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He left through the side door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya stared at the apple for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then she looked at her mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Okay,&#8221; Elena said, &#8220;you remember what I told you about your father?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya&#8217;s face changed immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not dramatically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The movement was smaller than that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her shoulders came forward by half an inch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You said he didn&#8217;t know about me.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s what I believed.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya looked at Luca again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time she did not look away quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Mom.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elena reached for her hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya let her take it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know how to find him,&#8221; Elena said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know his last name.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I didn&#8217;t know what happened to him after the summer I knew him.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I thought he had left.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya&#8217;s fingers tightened in hers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;But he didn&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The room seemed to contract around that one word.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya looked at Luca with an expression he could not read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He had faced judges, federal prosecutors, union bosses, men holding guns, men holding photographs of people he loved, and once a city councilman who had smiled while promising to bury half Luca&#8217;s organization under subpoenas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">None of them had made Luca want to leave a room as badly as an eleven-year-old girl looking at him now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Is it you?&#8221; Maya asked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elena closed her eyes for half a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca did not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word hurt more coming out than he expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For real?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For real.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;How do you know?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca nodded toward the envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;A blood test.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Like on television?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Better than television.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That almost earned him something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not a smile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A flicker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then it was gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What percent?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Ninety-nine point nine nine nine seven.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya stared at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s a lot of nines.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It is.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;So you are my dad.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca&#8217;s chest tightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Biologically, yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya&#8217;s brow furrowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;What does that mean?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could have said it meant he was her father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wanted to say it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He wanted the word with a force that embarrassed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Elena had asked for honesty when it cost him something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first bill had arrived.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It means I helped make you,&#8221; Luca said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It doesn&#8217;t mean I earned the other word yet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya looked down at the forgotten cereal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Dad?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You mean you haven&#8217;t earned &#8216;Dad.'&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;That&#8217;s what I mean.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya traced one finger along the edge of her worksheet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Did you leave us?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There it was.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question Elena had warned him would come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;No.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maya looked up fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Then where were you?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca put both hands on the arms of his wheelchair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Six weeks after I last saw your mother, I got very sick.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The legs?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The legs were part of it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;But they were sleeping.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;You were right about that.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first time, Maya looked startled instead of frightened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Yes.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Actually right?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Actually right.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Then why didn&#8217;t the doctors know?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luca heard Elena&#8217;s warning in his mind again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Honest when it costs you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could have given Maya a gentler version.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could have said the doctors were mistaken.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could have said medicine was complicated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He could have delayed the ugliness until she was older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But someone had taken twelve years from all three of them, and Luca suddenly found he could not begin their relationship with a polished lie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Because someone made me sick on purpose,&#8221;
