Two hundred guests who had been laughing only seconds earlier now stood frozen beneath the crystal chandeliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My sister, Vivienne, still held the torn pieces of my shirt in her manicured hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her smile disappeared first.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My brother, Grant, slowly lowered his champagne glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But my father\u2014Arthur Vale\u2014looked as though someone had struck him across the face.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCommander Celeste Vale,\u201d Admiral Reed said clearly, making sure every investor, politician, journalist, and socialite heard him. \u201cIt is an honor to stand before the officer who saved thirty-seven sailors during the Black Meridian disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whispers spread through the ballroom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grant\u2019s face turned pale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My father tightened his jaw.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was,\u201d Reed replied. \u201cUntil this morning.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Behind him, two naval officers entered carrying a framed medal beneath a dark blue cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The admiral removed the cover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Navy Cross gleamed beneath the chandeliers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My father stared at it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then at the scars covering my back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For years, Arthur had told everyone that I had disappeared because I was unstable. Ungrateful. Addicted. A disgrace who had abandoned the Vale family after stealing money from the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of it was true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had joined the Navy under my mother\u2019s maiden name after Arthur threatened to destroy anyone who helped me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He believed he had erased me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead, he had hidden me from the world while I became someone he could no longer control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Admiral Reed pinned the medal to my torn shirt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Applause began slowly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then it spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Within seconds, the entire ballroom was standing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reached into my purse and placed a black envelope on the table beside his shattered glass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His name was printed across the front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat is that?\u201d Grant demanded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA courtesy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arthur opened the envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first page inside was a federal subpoena.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His hand began to shake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then he saw the second page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It contained a list of offshore accounts connected to Vale Maritime Industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Accounts he believed no one knew existed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Arthur looked up at me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
